Burmese American Science and Engineering Society

The History of Burmese American Science and Engineering Society

One evening in late 1988, a group of Burmese professionals met at Romantic Restaurant in San Gabriel for dinner. They thought it would be nice to have a non-profit,non-political and non-religious organization, which could give helping hands to new arrivals from Burma. That evening, the group made a consensus decision to build an organization and a network for communication. A few volunteered to kickoff and share the initial groundwork.

The group carried out follow-up discussions via phone coversations and meeting in persons at several places to formulate plans. Few days later, the group met again at the then Common Wealth Buddhist Monastery in Los Angeles, where the spouses cooked/brought and offered foods to the monks. At the meeting the group discussed suitable name for the organization, its objectives, and ways to proceed to achieve non-profit status, etc. The eagerness and team spirit to share the necessary effort to achieve the desired goal were evident, intense and wonderfully displayed by all participants.

As enthusiasm to build the organization picked up momentum, group members took turns to host ongoing meetings to discuss detailed objectives and bylaws of the organization. After several debates, a unanimous decision was made to name the organization as "Burmese American Science and Engineering Society"(BASES).

A registration form to register BASES as a non-profit organization was submitted to the State of California. Approval was eventually received from the state, and BASES was born!

Currently, the list of members is comprising many professionals and paraprofessionals from the diverse fields such as engineering, science, medical, legal, liberal and social arts. Although the organization's base is in Los Angeles, some members joined from San Diego and San Francisco.
